Design Principles Workshop

We noticed some gaps in how we were collectively approaching design at the IC level. To address this, I decided to reintroduce our design principles to the team, emphasizing their importance. But I also wanted to create an opportunity for team members to express their feelings about the team as a whole.

How did I do it?

So, I took each of our principles and brought them to life by creating characters and custom logos that aligned with them. Drawing from my illustration and design skills, I crafted unique symbols that represented each principle. Inspired by childhood memories of paper doll cutouts, I envisioned giving the team characters they could personalize, akin to creating their own superheroes.

Navigating the challenge of remote work, I turned to FigJam to facilitate our collaboration. I set up a digital board where each team member had space to acknowledge one another. Using Illustrator, I developed a comprehensive framework and began incorporating existing illustrations with new elements, dropping them into FigJam.

I allotted a week for team members to create their characters, name them, and give shoutouts to their colleagues in the file. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Not only did it provide an opportunity for team members to express gratitude and foster a closer bond, but it also allowed us to delve into what each principle meant to us individually and as a team.

The activity highlighted the importance of having fun while working towards our goals. It emphasized the significance of allowing each team member to be represented in their own way and giving them the space to express appreciation. By approaching it in a creative manner, we were able to remove any stigma around sharing thoughts and create a fun, inclusive platform for doing so.
